Fish Shop Celebrates 1st Birthday
Born in Ballater in the Scottish Highlands, Fish Shop DC is built on the same respect for the land and sea. Here we celebrate the fishing communities and traditions that are at the heart of Chesapeake Bay, reflecting our mission to bring together food, culture and community.
A year in, Fish Shop has continued to celebrate our roots across the Atlantic, and carved our own way on the Wharf.
Chef's Birthday Menu
To mark Fish Shop DC’s first birthday and Fish Shop Ballater’s third birthday, we present a twin anniversary menu celebrating signature dishes from both restaurants. The menu bridges both sides of the Atlantic, with ingredients adapted by location while maintaining shared techniques and spirit.
The menu is available at Fish Shop DC at dinner from April 29th to May 6th, $90 per-person**.

Born in Ballater
As we celebrate our first birthday, our friends in Ballater mark their third anniversary.
Fish Shop originated in Ballater, a village in the Scottish Highlands where tradition, craftsmanship, and respect for the land and sea shape everyday life. That spirit continues to define Fish Shop today, guiding our approach to food, design, and hospitality.
Here in DC, our Scottish roots are woven throughout the space—from our suspended fish installation crafted with Scottish willow, to bespoke tartans by textile designer Araminta Campbell.
EXPLORE FISH SHOP BALLATER
One year on
As we celebrate our first year in Washington DC, we’re reflecting on the milestones that have shaped Fish Shop so far. Over the past year, our Head Chef Ria Montes was named as StarChefs‘ Rising Star Chef; Fish Shop was won Eater DC’s Best Design; we featured in the Michelin Guide Washington DC 2025, and we were listed in Washingtonian’s 100 Best Restaurants. Alongside these recognitions, we’ve also raised over $1,500 for Dreaming Out Loud Inc., supporting local farmers and food producers.
A shared ethos
Sustainability is a shared ethos between Fish Shop DC and Fish Shop Ballater, rooted in the traditions of Scottish coastal life—where respect for land, sea, and season guides all that we do.
We work with trusted fishermen using low-impact methods such as rod and line, gill net, pound net, and bow and arrow. Fish is prepared whole in-house to ensure quality and minimise waste.
In keeping, all of our farmed produce is responsibly sourced from local suppliers, our meat is free-range, and our wine programme focuses on biodynamic farming practices.
Even our interiors are shaped through sustainability, utilising recycled, reclaimed, and salvaged materials.
